One of the big takeaways from RSNA this year was confirmation that Windows XP users will no longer be HIPAA compliant in about 4 months.  On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP.

According to one HIPAA consultant:

HIPAA Security Rule section 164.308(a)(5)(ii)(B) states that you must implement “procedures for guarding against, detecting, and reporting malicious software.” Obviously if you cannot update your software to protect your systems against malicious software, it is impossible for you to comply with this HIPAA Security Rule specification.  Related Article

XRV will be taking coordinated action with our Vendors to provide an upgrade path for our existing XP users in the 1st Quarter of 2014.  Since Windows 7 runs on 4GB RAM and the older XP devices were generally 1-2 GB RAM, in the majority of these cases the entire PC hardware will need to be upgraded.  Fujifilm is providing an upgrade to the new HP computer with FDX Console Software.  Konica is working on their upgrade since they still are utilizing XP as the platform for their software.  Carestream believes their users will have a 2 year reprieve since their software is “embedded” however at this point XRV has not received final notification.

Stay tuned – more information will be forth coming once the Vendors have released their upgrade path.

Another Windows/HIPAA issue on the horizon?  In early 2015, Microsoft Server 2003, which also currently runs on millions of servers, will also stop getting any patches or updates.  Fun, fun, fun!

X-Ray Visions would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.  This year XRV has decided to contribute to three charities in the name of our customers and vendors.  We have donated to The Gay Bowers Memorial Christmas Party for underprivileged children, Christian Holmberg Memorial for Best Buddies, and Love Gives Adoption.  We decided it would be beneficial to instead of sending presents to our customers and vendors that we would spend the money on people who need it the most during this time of the year.  See below for a short description of the charities we contributed to.

The Gay Bowers Memorial Christmas Party:

The Gay Bowers Memorial Christmas Party collects donations to help support the Santa Ride which is held by the Fairfax County Motor Squad for the past 30 years.  The Fairfax County Motor Squad along with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfax City Motor Squad, Town of Vienna Motor Squad, and the Falls Church Sheriff’s Office Motor Squad collect toys for kids with cancer in local hospitals. We utilize local businesses, citizens, and elementary schools in Fairfax County to get donations.

Christian Holmberg Memorial for Best Buddies:

Best Buddies® is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Love Gives Adoption:

Love Gives is a Movement.  An extension of Centerpoint Church charged with raising at least $30,000 to bless 3 families with funds to assist them in the adoption process. Our prayer is not only to have Love Gives be an extension to help adoptive parents, but be a light to the community to support foster parents, single mothers & even families that see foster care is their only option.
